I stayed at Belrose Place in Accra for two weeks and overall had a pleasant stay, though there were a few bumps at the start. I arrived on a Sunday evening around 7pm, and first impressions weren’t the best. It took quite a while for reception to locate an apartment for me, and when they did, the apartment hadn’t been cleaned. I raised this concern, but was told housekeeping had finished for the day and would come the next morning. I booked the duplex apartment, and while it was nice, the living room looked quite different from the photos on Booking.com. That said, things did improve over the next few days—service got better, and I began to enjoy my stay. The staff were super lovely throughout, especially the doormen and housekeeping team—they really stood out. However, I do wish I had been given a proper tour or at least some orientation upon arrival. I had to ask around myself to find out about the gym, restaurant, and even the Wi-Fi password. It’s clear that this is a new development and still finding its feet. Hopefully, they take feedback on board to smooth out the guest experience moving forward. Despite the rocky start, I would stay here again—the location is perfect, very close to Boundary Road and easy to get a cab if needed.
Accra is a city with all the tools and resources to be a great destination in West Africa; however, it is far from that. The touristy sites, such as the castle and forts (UNESCO World Heritage Site), were abandoned and neglected. The infrastructure was also far from ideal, with many of the main roads unpaved and people asking for money to pass. I had a very uncomfortable encounter with two locals that wanted to charge me to walk along the beach, even though it was clearly a public space. The matter was resolved when two other locals explained to them that my friends and I had been walking along Labadi Beach for some time. This scares away tourists. Throughout my time there, the meals felt expensive. I was paying for very regular meals for USD$20-30. For a country that is so rich in gold, coffee, and cocoa, I was expecting more. Clearly, the revenue from these resources is not being invested correctly.
Accra is organised, beautiful, safe. It it relatively more developed than other countries in West Africa. Ghana also has a better educational system. The standard of living in Ghana is higher. Ghana has 24 hours electricity. I visited Safari Valley, a luxury eco Safari resort, with recreational activities such as horse riding, archery, nature walks, bike riding, watching exotic birds and animals. I also visited a waterfall close to Safari Valley.
Great place of peacefulness, wonderful people but needs a lot of work on roads outside of the central city areas. Public transportation buses need complete overhaul with cleaner and newer vehicles. Most of all issues with lights and water outage issues need to be resolved fully along side the bad roads.
The vehicles traffic in Accra was too much due to poor roads construction and inadequate traffic lights to control the movement of vehicles/cycles. I think the government has to invest more into proper roads construction to avoid vehicles/cycles accidents and collision. From the rural areas to the urban areas, all roads must be properly constructed, pot holes free and water free roads. I had my breakfast and dinner in the hotel which were good. I also went out to eat rice and beans from the local food sellers on the street in noon time, which were at least good some how. My first day coming there was not easy but that also helped me to explore more places like the mountains surrounding Pokoasi environs . Thank you!!
I could have stayed a little longer to enjoy more of the social events and night life, also to visit a local beach. The pollution on the main roads is not pleasant, but the neighbourhood where I stayed was delightful with its market stalls and little mosques.
