Manchester city centre seemed clean and visitor friendly, plenty of street signs pointing to local attractions and a very good transport system. A bustling city with an amazing grouping of buildings young and old. We were visiting Bridgewater Hall (a truly fantastic concert venue) and found the Leonardo Hotel (opposite) to be an excellent choice. The Science and Industry Museum and the Art Gallery are worth a visit. There are surprising pockets of history like Castlefield and Deansgate but they are hidden and need to be discovered. But overall the city is a hodge-podge of bad architecture including a lot of new tall towers placed senselessly throughout the city. The Chapel Street where the hotel is located is visually depressing - rundown buildings and dirty lanes wherever one looks. Obviously there seemed to be no city planning vision and willingness to keep the city clean. Streets are dirty, garbage all over especially in side streets and along the canals. Eating out is expensive for this type of city and 10 - 12.5% service charge is common. Trains station and airport are outdated and not up to snuff. The food was great, and the cocktails were even better — every spot had its own charm.
