FAQs about hotels in Bologna

A Gourmet Delight

World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered to be better than in this medieval gem.

Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look for "ragú" on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savor their food, so a meal can last for hours.

Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops are found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage sites. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views of this red-roof city.

The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square, the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088, are home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna accommodations at Booking.com range from small B&Bs to luxury hotels, all easily accessible from Bologna Airport just outside the city.

What Guests Said About Bologna:

La Citta Rossa was stunning.

La Citta Rossa was stunning. Just loved wandering the streets under the high arches of the covered walkways, admiring the grand buildings. Have a coffee or a glass of local wine in a bar in the main square, Piazza Maggiore, and watch the world go by. Admire Neptune's fountain then climb the steps to the top of the clock tower to get a fabulous view of the city. Unfortunately, the twin leaning towers had to be admired from the outside as the accessible one was closed. We didn't have time to visit the many museums but we will definitely be back. For vegans, eating at the Botanica Lab was a must - superb dining with fresh organic ingredients (they run a cookery school as well). My non-vegan son loved it as much as I did. We also ate at a traditional Trattoria (Trattoria Pizzeria Belle Arti) with its dark wood panelling, soft golden lighting and cosy charm. The pizzas were wood fired, thin, large and delicious! Locals were eating there, which is always a good sign.

Apart from the towers (which you can only look at) and the main square (with the wonderful fountain), it's not packed with sites unless you love art museums. I was disgusted by the graffiti, which was everywhere across the city, with plenty of homeless-looking people smoking weed (in front of the cathedral). I have been all over Italy and really wouldn't come back here ever again and I never thought I'd say that about an Italian city but it is just horrible..

The Old town of Bologna is simply delightful.

The Old town of Bologna is simply delightful. Plenty to see and do, and the food is as good as anywhere else, but at a reasonable price. There are also many attractions in the nearby towns which we venture into a couple of times. Looking forward to our next visit there.

Magnificent historic sites, churches and museums.

Magnificent historic sites, churches and museums. The Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio where you can visit the il Teatro Anatomico and the Biblioteca Comunale, when it is open, are a must see! Food is great, but pricey, which makes sense in the heart of the city. All sites are at walking distance, however, there is also a great bus service. Just make sure you are standing at the right direction and have checked the bus schedule for that line. You can combine a day trip to Florence, which is only 20 minutes by train, and not only. There are plenty of destinations reachable by train around Bologna and all worth visiting.

The public transport is convinient. The food is amazing. I didn't took any guided tour and I regret it. I was there 8 days and I think it is a city that can offer a lot more, both culinary and historical places worth. Definitely comming back!

Bologna is definitely a beautiful city.

Bologna is definitely a beautiful city. Wander on foot and discover many beautiful spots hidden in the narrow streets of the city. At the moment, there are tram works going on, and several streets are closed. Some landmarks are also under maintenance, such as the statue of Neptune and the Two Towers, so you might not be able to see them properly. On Sunday, there are neither buses nor taxis running in the old town. Get your bus tickets in advance, because it’s difficult to find tickets in the city center.
