We had to go to Newcastle on very short notice in peak Xmas holiday period & were very lucky to find Gateshead Tavern. The rooms were basic but clean & comfortable with ample parking. It was a pleasant surprise to find a place that never ripped people off by jacking up their prices in peak season so pass on our thanks to management

The whole set-up was beautiful with the adjoining access to the club for meals and entertainment quiet area water pressure was spot on with the shower and the room was quite warm and comfortable .

The accommodation part is a let down.
The accommodation part is a let down. Small dated rooms, very basic bathroom lacking shelf / bench space.
Bed is comfortable but curtains above bed let in lots of light as they are not against window frame so was hard to get to sleep with so much light coming in.
Downstairs pub area and food was great.

Good base for visiting the very lovely Blacksmiths beach and Lake Macquarie. Found we could have done a lot more in the local area and surrounding Newcastle and Hunter region if we had more time available.
Recommend checking out Belmont 16s sailing club situated over the lake for a meal.

The Swansea Hotel, RSL and Workers club have great meals! Public Transport runs to Charlestown and elsewhere. Some great Snooker players once lived there, and it was the location of a scene in Mel Gibson's first movie. Do not swim in the channel because it has a mean current and blue ringed octopuses live there. There are no more boat hires!

The Charlestown Mall was worth staying here for no other reason,the Shopping and food was amazing, not to mention the 6 Cinema Movie place in it... it was a bonus as we came here for the Koori Knockout Netball Carnival. The Gatehead Tavern is just a great place to stay for comfort and economical reasons, I have stayed here 5 times in the last few years and will keep coming back :)

Because I grew up in lake Macquarie, I have a fondness for the close proximity of lake, bush and beach. Nothing else comes close to this amount of peace and quiet, its not too touristy, but just busy enough to have a lot of choice regarding food, accommodation and lovely views of the lake!!

Caves Beach villas are excellent for a short stay with your family. You can park your car at your villa and walk everywhere. There is access to the private pool, to Hams Beach, Caves Beach, Quarry Beach and Split Rock. There is a private pool for guest use, and a lovely Bar & Grill on site. The complex is quiet and generally well maintained. We felt safe, relaxed and enjoyed our stay very much.

The house is located directly on the lake and the back wall of the house is glass for a fabulous view. Good quality furniture & well stocked kitchen. Ceiling fans in all rooms & air con in main living area & ensuite. A lovely modern comfortable house. Unfortunately there is no supermarket or corner shop nearby so best to bring essentials with you.

Convenient location. Overall the accommodation was reasonable for the price and adequate for our needs.
We did not have time to check the surrounding neighborhood as it was a quick trip to help our son move.

I love the food, the rooms & the outlook - it's amazing for the price. Would highly recommend staying there.
My only comment is if you have trouble with stairs, as theirs no lift to the rooms.
It's a beautiful place for a lovely walk before dinner.

Lovely room - shame you have to step in to the shower to close the bathroom door! Also the sanding from the painters had not been cleaned up and there was dust all through the shower and in the bathroom floor
