My rating is for the island of ortigia in Siracusa. I visited one night and one afternoon, stayed at a hotel 10 min drive from Ortigia that had free parking since we had a car which was good because we did a day trip to Noto and Modica. Oritigia was absolutely beautiful, surrounded by water, beautiful buildings and architecture, great shops and restaurants and they had nice fountains, old ruins and the castle. A beautiful spot to explore, steeped in history. Ragusa is a great location to explore the surrounding area. We loved walking the winding streets of Ragusa Ibla. There isn’t much to see in Avola but the beach is great (golden sand) so it’s a good location for relaxing. Great seafood restaurants and our favourite was Portomatto. This is a special, classy restaurant with very reasonable prices. Great for both seafood and high quality pizza. Modica is a very old town on South-east Sicily, quite important for her history and baroque architecture. Getting around is easy, if you like to walk a lot! There are a lot of stairs and climbings to get to Modica Alta, but it's worth. Food is very good and there are still restaurants with good prices. From Modica you can reach the beach in half an hour by car, and you can also visit several good natural spots (like Riserva Naturale di Pantalica, Cavagrande, Vendicari) just driving one/two hours. We went just out of season, so it wasn't too busy, but the size of the car park told us that this place gets extremely busy in high season. It is quite a small seaside town so I would imagine it is very crowded very quickly! Scala steps okay but better seen when decorated. Official followed us around the old gaol, very intimidating! Did they think we were going to damage something? Reasonable buses around town, but very poor getting away. We were given false information about the bus to leave, others didn't arrive. Had to get an expensive taxi. Beautiful beach and cliffs around the town. Unfortunately not many restaurants and option to eat. The litters are on the beach and no one cares there.
