I liked the ability to walk a relatively short distances in Verdun, to a wide variety of Cafes and restaurants, and monuments. I liked the variety of restaurants near or along the water front. Also, by car, it is a short drive to major Verdun museums and battle grounds and American cemeteries in the area. So munch to see and comprehend.i would have loved staying longer, but only had a two weeks to see other destinations as well. Also, It will be best rent a car at the Charles De Gaulle airport.

We can't comment on Verdun as we only stayed one night at the beginning of our holiday. From afar it looked interesting but the area where the hotel is situated doesn't look prosperous and quite frankly safe. I am sure there other parts which we didn't have time and were too tired to explore.

Heart of it by the river was very warm and intriguing, apparently oriented towards the people who live there and like to meet at the sidewalk cafes to talk and read newspapers; not a prosperous town on a well-travelled circuit. Rather sleepy in places, with awkward-hanging window shutters and walls that haven't been painted in many years. The old military fortifications are extraordinary to see looming over it all. We were only passing through on our way to somewhere else, so impressions were brief.

Verdun makes you realize the senselessness and sadness of war. The Memorial de Verdun and its museum is impressive. The ossuary de Douaumont makes one humble.
The city is dominated by the Citadel, which you can visit.
Verdun is a must see to get a better understanding of past en present day Europe.
To reflect stroll along the border of the river Meuse and enjoy one of the many terraces.

We stopped here on the way back from a bike tour just to look over some first world war memorials and Verdun is the perfect place to stay. we were limited for time so will be returning when we have more time as there is so much to see and discover and learn from in a small area. The town was quiet but full of food and drink places along side the river which was perfect for a relaxed meal and a few drinks.

We mainly went for a 'Battle field tour' -not an official, or guided tour, but self researched tour.
If you haven't been before , the 'battlefields start approx. 3m from property, and are an absolute maze of trenches, shell holes, and old fortifications, that stretch mile after mile !
The 'official' tourist sites are good , and reasonably priced , but there is SO much more to explore , whilst walking through the woods.(the ring of abandoned forts/gun batteries can be particularly good !)
It is worth taking the time to visit the 'left bank' sites, also -the 'Mort Homme', and 'Cote 304', etc, although there is very little in facilities in this area, so take EVERYTHING that you may need !
Also in the area, i would recommend a visit to 'The Butte du Varquois', and 'Les E'parges',- both areas of intense fighting and underground mining, that frankly, have to be seen to be believed!
PLEASE BE AWARE -
This whole area was 'Red Zone' after the conflict, and as such there are munitions, equipment, explosives etc, possibly, everywhere...
In short, have visited many WW1 battlefields in France, Belgium, etc, but if you want to experience what a WW1 battlefield was really like , you have to visit Verdun !
PS_ Be aware that you may well have trouble with your fone signal in the woods _ if you are depending on google maps, for example , to navigate !!
I stayed here for my visit of Verdun Memorial. The small villa is a bit outside the city center, 5min by foot, which I very much liked as the city center was a fairly touristic so the Maison Mirabeau provides a great calm atmosphere right next to it.
The owner is very nice, it is a real French house not a standard hotel but rooms are excellent with very modern bathroom and privacy as in a normal hotel. Couldn't have wished for more during my stay.
Owners were very kind and helpful. The room was updated and clean. Parking was across and up the street about 100 meters. Felt very safe and restaurants were within walking distance. The breakfast was very nice - fresh and local. They also had bottled water for us. The downstairs rooms would work well for parents and children.
We stayed here on our way from Germany to Calais as it was about halfway to the Eurotunnel. Having free parking (at the weekend!) nearby was really convenient. The hotel is really close to the town centre the river as well as nice restaurants and bars. Many historic sites also very nearby...
We did not realise it was a boat. It says hotel not flotilla. We looked at the picture and thought the hotel was behind. Nothing in the description says This is a floating hotel. We would never have booked as I have a great fear of being on water. Very misleading
Very comfy beds. Complete breakfast for a nice start of the day. Viktor and Fabrice are very good hosts, very helpful. They know a lot about the surroundings and places to go. Hotel de Montaulbain is an excellent place to explore the ww1 sites.
Hotel was fantastic, all the staff were lovely. Not sure what we were expecting but it was beyond our expectations. The town itself was lovely and what a great location. Even had ev charging, which really helped our trip.
Staff and owners were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is close to the Memorial de Verdun and the battlefields.
The breakfast was sufficient, at night the restaurant did not offer the right price/quality level.
The breakfast was generous in its servings, and provided a wide variety of choices of food and drink. Local products were served and enhanced the feeling that we were eating just like people of Verdun.
Fairly basic amenities but everything you need honestly. Staff was really nice. If you want to see war sites you can do 4 hour walk to them and back pretty easily.
