Oria feels like an undiscovered gem. It's kind of sleepy, particularly during the day. We were there in the week before their Palio, and things started to pick up prior to this summer festival, but at times it felt like the town was ours alone. The castle is magnificent, the Giardino Montalbano is beautiful and mysterious, the church is impressive and the crypt with preserved mummies is unique. Finding a place open for lunch or dinner that meets your desire and timeframe can be difficult but it's part of the fun. It doesn't pop like Ostuni or some other towns, but it is so charming and has a fraction of the tourists.

The town / city is medieval and after you pass the more scruffy outer regions the centre is nice, especially near the top closer to the castle. Go past the Castello pub and down the hill opens out into a big square with lots of restaurants and cafe with tables outside. There is a street disco at weekends.
This is it yet a big tourist area so almost all are locals.
Very few people speak English so you would strongly benefit from learning find basic Italian. I learned quite a bit during the week as I had to use google translate so much and ended up picking up a fair bit by the end of the week.
The nearest big city is Leece. This is a beautiful city and worth a visit. The coast is about 20 to 28 mins away, the whole area is great and the coast stunning. We visited the Trulli village at Arabello , also the stunning town of Polignano where the coast with its surrounding rock face and houses built into the hill are stunning.
I hope this all helps.

Totally ignored by guidebooks we picked this at random and we’re totally blown away. Beautiful, atmospheric medieval city, you could almost touch the medieval culture in the air it was so incredible. Beauty wherever you walk, not touristy at all. I would recommend this highly to anyone that wants to see Puglia at its best and the history you can touch.

Oria is a very pretty town with interesting churches and museums to visit, as well as a castle. The locals were friendly and eating out was cheap: lovely coffee for under two Euros in most places. We hired a car and travelled around a fair bit. Places worth visiting are Otranto, Lecce, Bari and Castellana Grotte (fabulous caves). Travelling around took longer than expected as the roads are all minor.
If you don’t plan to hire a car, be warned that taxis are pretty well non-existent in Oria.
If you don’t speak Italian, communication will be a bit of a problem! We learnt a few phrases before travelling out, and this was very helpful.
From day one we felt like being at home. The reason is that everything you can think of and then some more was already in there. I don't want to name all the items but it's just amazing how the owner went an extra mile in providing things that people need on their vacation. A LOT of food and drinks awaited us in the fridge and the kitchen. Of course we purchased our own food, but there was stuff for the whole week. Oria is also a perfect spot for exploring the southern part of Apulia (Puglia).
Beautiful apartment in the heart of Oria just a minutes walk from the center and the old town. The apartment was very well kept, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely with really nice freshly squeezed orange juice and croissants. Our host Raffaello was very helpful all week with lifts to our second property and to the Airport and helped us with all the information we needed about Oria and Puglia. Highly recommend Casa Nona Jacinta for your stay in the beautiful old town of oria.
Fun, top-floor apartment with HUGE terrace in the underrated town of Oria. Kitchen is well outfitted with better-than-average pots and pans. The dishwasher and washing machine worked well and the bed was particularly comfortable. The terrace was perfect for breakfasts, an afternoon drink, or an evening chat. Oria itself is also worth mentioning, it flies under the radar but has a lot of charm and is absolutely worth visiting. It's also a great base to explore Salento.
The old and restructured apartment was very pleasant, we lived the old and quite Italian town atmosphere of Oria. The host was very kind and explained us everything we needed. The apartment, despite being various centuries old, is restructured and refurbished to accommodate modern needs. The way the lights and the furniture are setup helps to create a more immersive atmosphere of the Italian old town. We were satisfied with our stay
I really enjoyed my stay at Ambrosia Bed & Breakfast, located near historic buildings in a small medieval town called Oria, not far from the beaches.
The host Serena was very friendly and welcomed me with care. A dedicated person with a passion for history who will explain everything you need to know to have a great stay. I hope I will return there.
You absolutely must try Osteria Luce!
We had a great stay! Our host Raffaello was very easy to communicate with and check-in was easy. The apartment is right in the historical part of Oria and there is parking for free nearby. The room was clean and spacious and had everything we needed. Breakfast was included at a local coffee shop which was great. We will absolutely stay there again next time.
Property is in the heart of Oria, perfect place to be 30min both from the Adriatic Sea and the Ionic sea. The house is very comfortable with big spaces and all that you will need even for long stays, cleaning is outstanding.
Simona has been a very kindly host and she worried about everything we might need.
La Corte del Re is perfectly located to visit Oria and its surroundings. Very spacious flat with high ceilings in the historical centre of the town, has all the amenities for a home away from home. Owner easily reachable and accommodating of our request for a late check out. Highly recommended!
This property was very well located right in the centre of Oria. The key pick up was straightforward, Chiara’s parents were waiting for us. Everything was new and the place was spotless. There is a flight of about 20 stairs to the property, they are well maintained and there’s a handrail.
Francesco and Giulio are fantastic hosts. The accommodation is unique and stunning and is situated in the old town of Oria. Free parking available near to the house. Breakfast is very nice. Overall, this is a fantastic place to stay in the historic centre of Oria.
Highly recommend.
Excellent location in the centre of Oria, very close to the main restaurants and attractions. The apartment is very nicely renovated and super clean. Angela is a great host! She even made a cake for us!! THANK YOU!
The apartment is charming and the location is unparalleled if you want to tour Oria's old city.
The neighbours are nice too (The lent us an umbrella when we were in dire need of one).
