We arrived mid-afternoon in the depths of the NZ winter to a warm home and equally warm welcome. The building is a remarkable and unique building made largely of wood, built, assembled and constantly innovated upon by the skillful hands of Dewi and his equally lovely wife Jen.
Although we’d booked the loft, they allowed us to choose whichever rooms we wished for privacy in order to maximise our comfort, a recurrent theme of our stay.
Although a little way out of the region’s main town of Matamata, its location on a back road guaranteed an absolutely silent - and very dark - night, perfect for that night’s rest city people didn’t realise was possible, with an amazing opportunity for stargazing to boot. Given our intention to visit Hobbiton, it was also a short drive there and back.
Quiet · Great value - Rooms Extremely comfy and spacious, with ample beds and constant warmth from the fireplace that pumps heat through the house. Pitch black once the lights are out, and totally silent, making for an incredible night’s sleep.
Nearby activities - Hobbiton - south of Matamata. Visits to the largest waterfall in NZ, visible from the back window of the kitchen. Easy access to one of NZ’s great trails, just east of the property.
Noteworthy details - We woke to fresh baked nutty seed loaf in the oven and a huge wooden table covered in breakfast condiments. I’ll remember that bread and its texture for years. The bathroom was situated on a large solid concrete slab over the kitchen, kept toasty warm through the heated floor from the fireplace.

This plane was fabulous! The property is so beautiful you could have a wedding there. Sue is a fantastic chef and we had an amazing breakfast. Our room was lovely and had a door to a wraparound porch overlooking the
gardens and filled with the songs of the local birds. I highly recommend a stay here!

Centrally located town of the North Island worth an overnight stop for lots of sightseeing spots nearby and good eateries. We recommend Hobbiton to anyone, even if you are not a fan of the movie series. It is a very enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Also do not miss the unique Blue Spring in Putaruru.
The township of Matamata has many drinking and eating options for all budgets and some really nice places are reasonably priced.

We visited specifically to visit Hobbiton, this was a perfect stay for this purpose. We had a great meal at The Redoubt, although if eating on a Wednesday evening it helps if you enjoy Country and Western music. Pretty much everything was in walking distance. The area is really well looked after

Great place to unwind and just chill.
Great place to unwind and just chill. Handy to Rotorua and Tauranga too. If you want somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities but with all the essentials, Matamara is the place to be.

We loved our stay at A Place In the Paddock.
We loved our stay at A Place In the Paddock. It was just what it says. A beautifully appointed 3 bedroom house with room for family and friends right in the middle of a working dairy farm. We all enjoyed our stay. We visited the nearby Okoroire Hot Springs in Tirau close by. The are beautiful natural thermal pools in the bush. A must do.
One of the best motels we stayed in our trip to NZ north island - very clean and modern -Everything was perfect and Spotless clean -
Location perfect all restaurants and shops nearby .. quiet and peaceful area ..
Parking at the motel was also very convenient and easy --
Hobbiton just 20 mins away
Me and my family loved our stay in Matamata and in Broadway motel - I loved the small down of Matata - should've stayed more nights !
We really enjoyed the quiet and peaceful location of Jen and Dowie’s Airbnb. The story of how they built the house without nails is amazing and we appreciated the craftsmanship and how homey and comfortable the barn is. They are wonderful hosts and provide amazing food and conversation. We also really appreciated Jen making calls for us and recommending restaurants. We will hoped be able to go back to one of our favorite Airbnbs.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Matamata Country B&B and couldn’t have asked for more. The attention to detail in the room was superb. Exceptionally clean, private and comfortable. The large shower had great pressure and hot water. Having a car park right outside the studio and being so close to town was really handy. The hosts were extremely hospitable, we will definitely be back and look forward to our next visit!
The hosts, Glenn and Mark, were amazing! They made us a lovely dinner and homemade breakfast which was phenomenal. The studio itself is decorated so nicely and cleverly, e.g. with USB sockets near the bed which is a rarity in places we stayed in New Zealand. They have a picnic table on their fields where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine with a truly beautiful and peaceful setting.
It was a gorgeous country retreat near Hobbiton, which was great for an overnight stay. It had everything you needed for a comfortable visit. The goats were just outside the front of the cottage and were very sweet, hiding in their hutch out of the weather.
The cottage is near Matamata, so it was an easy drive to have dinner in town.
The location worked very well for us. The hostess gave us some good recommendations for hikes nearby. This was a very good location for our visit to the Hobbiton Set nearby. The downtown is charming, and the hostess gave us great recommendations for places to dine out.
The location to the shops and restaurants was great. There was a kitchen we could use to make tea and coffee at breakfast. the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was clean. there was a fan provided in our room. Although the hotel wasn’t fancy, overall we were happy.
Lovely and spacious stay with comfy beds, a nice shower, and room to stretch out. Great central location in Matamata. Arrival instructions were very clear and self check in was easy. Wonderful value, makes me wish we'd had time to stay there longer!
So cute and comfortable!!! Delicious home made bread and fresh eggs for breakfast. It was so relaxing being out on a farm next to goats. And we had a delicious Italian dinner in Matamata. Super close to Hobbiton!! Thanks for a great night!
Everything. The friendliness of our host, the beauty of the garden, the goats' antics, the beautiful poplar trees, the stream near by.... the accommodation was really good... everything you needed was there. Thank you.
The room was clean and comfortable with all the facilities we needed. The bed was comfortable with good linen. The motel was very convenient for everything in Matamata but not at all noisy.
Super nice staff ready to help with everything. The pub of the hotel had great food and drinks. Great location in the center of Matamata and 10 minutes drive to Hobbiton.
location was great, property was inviting, host was extremely helpful and accomodation was fab, we will definitely go back there if we need to stay over in Matamata
A place in the Paddock is a lovely space on a farm just outside of Matamata- there is a small museum on property- the space is clean, quiet and just lovely!
