Machu pichu is quite spectacular and set in an equally spectacular natural setting.
However the queues for the train, the bus going up, the entry, the toilets, the cafe, and the 800 metre queue for the bus back, together with the precipitous stairs and the congested trails through the site, greatly diminished the enjoyment of the experience . Waiting times amounted to several hours, often in the sun. And this was with pre-purchased tickets.
Weigh up a visit carefully. We enjoyed our stay at Ollantaytambo much more - a nice little rural town with fabulous archeology and Peruvian culture

It was a childhood dream for me. I had a foggy day when was my ticket. It was a mystery. Maybe it'll be better if it was sunny. The prise was very high, but when you have a dream, you should do it.

Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years.
Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years. There are no know written records of who built it, what it was used for or the part it played in Inca history. The guides are totally speculative. They have good stories..... but completely from their imagination. Do your homework and prepare for the visit.
- Bigest room we had in all Peru, with an amazing view on the mountains
- 3 minutes away from the bus stop to Machu Picchu, 1 from the train station, 1 from the market et 3 from all the restaurants
- Very clean with comfortable beds
- People were amazing to help us. They keep our backpack while we were at the Machu Picchu and they prepared us a breakfast to go before the opening hour.
- A special thanks to John and Alberto, the managers of the hotel who were very kind to guide us.
Eveything is perfect. Nice staff. Helped us a lot. Came to the station to lead us to the hotel. They even can help to print your ticket to Machupicchu. Leave a room for us to take a shower after hiking. Breakfast is good. The facilities are well functioning. Best hot water I got in Peru. With a view of mountain and sound of river. Laundry store is just 20 meters away. 5 sol per kilo. Highly recommended. If I come to machupicchu again, I will definitely live here.
Edouard and Edith have been exceptional hosts going above and beyond what one could expect. Their hotel is clean and well maintained. It is super central to take the bus to Picchu and near the train station. At same time away from the loud streets. The charming noise of the river nearby adds to the experience. We recommend anyone to book with E & E :) if you want to add to your Machu Picchu experience a local and friendly touch.
Good option to stay in Águas Calientes. It is located a little bit far from the main center, but in a very short walk (about 5 minutes) you reach the artisan market, train station and restaurants.
The hotel itself is nice. The staff is friendly. The room is big, clean and confortable. The breakfast is ok, but could be improved.
The hotel is close to shops and restaurants. It is also located near the thermal baths and a river so we had an excellent view from our window. The beds were super comfortable and we were able to get a good night’s sleep. The breakfast was simple but complete with fruit, fresh eggs, different types of bread etc.
It looks clean at the first sight, but it’s not. I can feel that they didn’t change the bedding. The bathroom is small, you can’t turn around in the shower room and the water splashes out of the basin. This is the worst hotel I’ve stay in Peru among all six, I count the hours before leaving here.
They came to the train station to help with our luggage and our return trip. The breakfast was good. Be ready to climb stairs in the town and the hotel. The owner and staff were so nice and helpful. They helped us find a guide for Machu Picchu who did an excellent job
The room was very nice and clean. The bed was king sized and very comfortable. The hotel was easy to find, just off the main square. Guido was very friendly and helpful. We had numerous issues with our stay and Guido tried to make it right.
Very few reviews, yet I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed : the hotel is very clean, the facilities are of great quality and the French owner and his staff will help you in anything you need to optimize your Machu Picchu visit.
The staff was great. Aguas Calientes is a small town so you’d either stay at a 5 star hotel or not. If you pick the non 5 star hotels, which we did, most of them are close to the city center and the train station. We loved this small town.
I did not stay in the property, I booked and when I got in the hotel, they said it was full and put me in a much lower location charging the same. A lot of irresponsibility!!!!! This hotel should be punished from booking.
The kind reception lady managed to check us in early as we were quite sick and tired from Inca Trail. Hotel is easy to spot. Nice balcony view. Was the only breakfast hotel buffet in my Peru trip that had BACON!
It's a brand new hotel. A little hard to find, but it's perfect to discover Aguas Calientes.
The staff is great and very friendly. We left early to enjoy Machu Picchu and had a wonderful breakfast prepared.
Amazing and kind staff. The hotel is brand new and very clean. The location is perfect - in the centre of Aguas Calientes, but a little away from all the crowds.
