Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

We were lucky enough to arrive during the last week of term for the university students, which made the town lively and interesting. The tour of the university , particularly the library, was fascinating. It was also lovely to walk through the old town, eat pastries, listen to music and absorb the atmosphere. Sitting in the Botanic gardens with a book in the afternoon sunshine was an opportunity to relax in otherwise busy days.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit.
Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti.
There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Coimbra is a great city with very interesting historical sites and churches. Interesting shops and restaurants.
the Igreja santo Christo is especially good to visit situated in a lovely square. The adjoining old cafe has a wonderful atmosphere with a performance of FADO (traditional Portuguese music ) every weekday from 6pm
We recently spent two weeks in Portugal travelling by train and we stayed in 7 hotels during that time. This was the most comfortable of all the hotels we stayed it. We upgraded to a room with a balcony on the 5th floor and it was so worth the money. Not only did we have some outside space and an amazing view but we were also close to the bar and the roof terrace which was lovely in the evening. The breakfast buffet was absolutely outstanding - a fantastic selection of high quality loveliness!
Everything about this place is fantastic. Price. Value. Location. Staff. Rooftop! If you don’t show up to Coimbra with a plan, no problem. The front desk staff will set you up with an “itinerary” and a list of things to do. The 5th floor room with balcony and city view is more than worth the cost; however, the rooftop and the spectacular city is available to all guests regardless of room type. Bonus: free parking in the nearby underground parking garage. Muito obrigado Hotel Oslo!
Large spacious room. King bed was firm like most other beds I found in Portugal. The hotel lobby had a large feel to it as well. There was a feel of a lot of open space. Good selection of gins st the bar. The staff was very helpful in getting a sense of location and recommendations to visit sites and areas. We were treated to an amazing chocolate treat upon arrival to our room. Well done chef!
Centrally located, thoughtfully decorated quaint studio that had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Easy to access with codes provided for the front doors and unit doors. Unit was clean, and the staff was very friendly. Coimbra is a must see, and as is the case with most of Portugal, very hilly. Bring flat, comfortable footwear! Thank you for a lovely stay at Sofia Studios!
Location is very good. The old city and Coimbra university available by walk. Was very good for one night or more to explore Coimbra. But steps! Like 3 normal floors. Not good for luggage, aged people or problems with knees. Good to visit hotel Oslo just opposite to the appartement parking and ask for a terrace view. Take a glass of wine and enjoy the view. The staff is very friendly.
I have been travelling through Spain and Portugal for three months staying in different types of venues: hotels, apartments, shared spaces. I was concerned about a hostel type experience, but this eas a pleasant surprise. The best meeting experiences of my entire trip. Thanks to the shared kitchen! Plus a great value. Beautiful facility. Loved the terrace/ patio / back yard!
Location is excellent..almost directly across from Coimbra A train station. Decent facilities. A special recommendation to the staff’ and especially to Denise, who helped us with a hotel booking in Porto..she called the check in person in Porto and explained to him when we would arrive in Porto for check in. Her professional manner and kindness deserve special recognition.
Location is very central in the Coimbra old town: handy to everything. Quiet at night. We also liked the "roof garden".
The reception staff (at Hotel Oslo) and the young staff on-site at Entre Ruas (for cleaning and replacement of supplies) were extremely helpful. Overall, the apartment was spacious for three people, with two bedrooms and a big lounge/dining space.
The charm and history of the building, the restaurant (one of the best in the region), the pool, and last but not least the staff. While hospitality is very good in Portugal, the team of Quinta das Lagrimas was simply the best on my trip. SO kind, helpful and professional. Bravo!
The location is just opposite from Joannine Library, the inner yard looks like an oasis inside the medieval stones of the historic Centre. The welcoming drinks of Porto wine give a great taste of South Portugal. A breathtaking view from rooftop, especially at nights.
The rooms are large, comfortable, and extremely clean. The breakfast was fantastic, everything was fresh, and the outdoor space was perfect. The staff was always willing to help and give advice about the stay. The hotel is right next to the Coimbra train station.
Views were amazing over the city's lovely coloured buildings, Wonderfull kitch room totally bedazzled decor made for a special stay. Wonderful breakfast served in a lovely wicker basket. Hot tub.Thank you for making this one of our favourite stops in Portugal
The apartment is located right in the centre of Coimbra, which makes it an excellent spot for exploring the city. It is owned/operated by Hotel Oslo which is a few blocks away, and the staff were extremely kind and helpful.
The reception staff at Hotel Oslo (where you pick up the keys) just across the street where extremely friendly and helpful. The location of the apartment was excellent and there was plenty of equipment in the kitchenette.
Conveniently located modern hotel on the edge of the historic quarter of Coimbra. We selected this hotel because of driving and availability of parking in the garage below the hotel. Hotel met our needs.
Everything was perfect! The house is really peaceful, clean, and welcoming. After several noisy and busy hostels through Portugal I really appreciate the calm of this place.
This hotel was my favorite in Portugal. The staff are just amazing, helpful, caring, dedicated to making our stay enjoyable. Breakfast was awesome, with a great selection.
Very cute hotel. Staff were very friendly. Great location. I have been travelling 5 weeks in Spain and Portugal and this was my favourite accommodation
